Mattresses and other furniture seem to have a knack for locking in smells and odor. This is because the surface of these furniture are porous, and strong odors can easily seep through the surface. Cigarette smoke is one of the most common odors that lingers on furniture, and is especially difficult to remove when you smoke regularly.

Our helpful guide will get you started on removing the smell of smoke from your mattress using a few pantry staples, and simple but effective methods! Try these methods on your mattress at home, and say goodbye to the strong smell of cigarettes.

How to Get Cigarette Smell Out of the Mattress: 3 Simple and Effective Ways

While a good, deep cleaning is the best way to go when it comes to removing any smells, dirt, or dust from your mattress, you may opt to remove the light cigarette smell from your mattress using one of our simple yet effective methods that will save you from having to buy a new mattress!

Deodorize with Baking Soda

If the smell of smoke is light, then you can deodorize your mattress surface using the dry method using baking soda. Baking soda makes for an efficient deodorizer, and is commonly used to remove different types of odors from furniture, cupboards, and even inside refrigerators.

Sprinkle baking soda all over your mattress. Rub the powder into the nooks and crannies of the mattress, and let the powder sit for around an hour - the longer the better. You can also add a few drops of essential oils or to the powder before sprinkling baking soda on the mattress, but this may cause the smells to combine instead of dissipate.

The stronger the smell, the longer you should leave the dry powder on. When the allotted time is up, use your vacuum cleaner with the upholstery attachment to remove the excess powder. Repeat the entire process if the smell persists, or try one of our other methods to remove odors.

Spray Vodka to Remove Smoke Smell

Vodka is made up of mostly alcohol, which can be used to both sanitize and deodorize fabrics. Materials like the fabric in your mattress cover and your memory foam mattress tend to lock in various odors, and the cigarette smoke smell can easily permeate through these materials, and leave a very strong odor.

Memory foam mattresses cannot be washed either, as the foam interior may crumble from deep cleaning. In cases where you need to remove the cigarette smoke smell from your memory foam mattress or similar furniture, reach for that bottle of vodka in your home bar!

Use pure vodka, and place the alcohol in a spray bottle. Bring your mattress outside in the open air for quicker drying. Give your entire mattress a good spritz of vodka until you feel that the alcohol has permeated deep into the mattress. Let the soaked mattress sit in the fresh air to air dry, and repeat the process if the cigarette smell persists.

This method is perfect for a memory foam mattress as it requires no scrubbing or pressure, and the vodka will disinfect the foam as well as the surface. While vodka may have an alcoholic smell while wet, it should neutralize along with the cigarette smell after drying.

Make a Vinegar Solution to Remove Smoke Smells

If you're not too keen on using that expensive bottle of vodka on your shelf to deodorize your mattress, grab a bottle of distilled white vinegar instead to create a solution that will remove the cigarette smell. Mix together equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle, and add some lemon rind.

Take your mattress outside, and cover the entire mattress with the vinegar solution. You may want to use a fan to blow the smell of vinegar away from your house. Let the mattress sit until it is completely dry, not even the least bit damp. Like vodka, the vinegar smell should dissipate once dry, and it will deodorize your mattress at the same time.

This method is also good for your memory foam mattress, but vinegar is not a known disinfectant. If the smell of cigarette smoke persists, you may need a stronger method to remove the smell. Most professional cleaners will be able to remove the dirt and smells from your mattress, including any cigarette odor.

How to Keep Your Mattress Free From Any Odor

Our solutions above are classic ways to remove odors from most pieces of furniture. However, some odors may have different causes than others. For instance, musty smells come from mold and mildew colonies that must be eradicated to completely remove the smell coming from your mattress.

Meanwhile, a gas-like, rotten egg smell is when bacteria festers in a dirty mattress, and thrives with moisture from sweat, urine stains, or other body fluids. In this case, a thorough disinfection is a must to completely clean and remove the odor from your mattress.

Deep cleaning is still the best way to keep your mattress fresh and free from any undesirable smells. Professional mattress cleaners will know how to refresh your mattress without destroying the material, so consider availing a mattress cleaning service at least once a year to maintain the cleanliness of your furniture, even if you use protective covers.
