Though you use a mattress cover on your bed, your mattress can still harbor dirt and dust that vacuuming can remove. Learn why and how to vacuum mattress pads with our essential guide to cleaning your bedding!

Vacuuming your bed is important as you lie in it every night to sleep. How can you get a good night's rest if your mattress is causing you to break out, have allergies, or feel dusty all over? While washing your mattress is a good way to get rid of dust, vacuuming helps maintain the cleanliness as you use it without having to wait for it to dry.

5 Reasons Why You Should Vacuum Your Bed Mattress

Reason #1: Gets Rid of Dust Mites and Allergens

Of course, vacuuming your mattress would remove the mites, dust particles, and other allergens from your bed. Most mattresses have quilted surfaces where these particles can hide in, and the upholstery attachment of vacuum cleaners can get into the nooks and crannies of your mattress to remove them.

Dust is made of dead skin flakes, hair, and pollen. These often fall into the mattress as you sleep on it, and the sweat and oils from your body causes the dust to stick onto the fibers. Vacuum the mattress when dry, or sprinkle some baking soda to effectively clean the mattress.

Reason #2: Fungal Spores May Be Lurking

Besides dust allergens, fungal spores may get into your mattress. As you lie on your bed, you tend to sweat, and that sweat gets into the mattress. Fungal spores thrive on moisture, and your damp mattress is the perfect environment for them to grow. Vacuuming the mattress removes these spores, and allows your mattress to dry as well.

Reason #3: For Maintenance

A mattress is essentially a low maintenance piece of furniture that only needs spot cleaning and washing every year or so. In between washing, however, it is a good idea to vacuum up the entire surface to maintain the cleanliness of your mattress, and spot clean with warm water and dish soap to remove stains.

Plus, the vacuum cleaner can be used to fluff up the mattress, keeping the plush and soft texture for longer. We don't often wash our mattresses as they take a long time to dry, and washing takes more effort and time.

Reason #4: Cleans Up Food Particles

If you have a habit of eating in bed, vacuuming up your mattress cleans up the crumbs left behind after your snacking. It is important to clean up your mattress immediately after you've finished eating so you don't end up sleeping in a pile of food crumbs.

Reason #5: Removes Pet Hairs

Whether or not you let your pet hop up on your bed, your mattress would undoubtedly have pet hairs embedded into it. Vacuuming removes these pet hairs, as well as pet dander, which could be a source of allergies for you. As well as vacuuming your mattress, vacuum the carpets, rugs, floor, and surrounding area to prevent pet hairs from flying everywhere.

How Often Should You Vacuum the Bed Mattress?

Ideally, you should be vacuuming your mattress pad once a month when you do your bedding changes. This is the ideal time to vacuum up your mattress as you can keep your pad clean before you replace the mattress cover.

A helpful tip would be to sprinkle baking soda over the entire mattress surface just before you vacuum. This will remove any odors from bodily fluids, and clump together with dead skin cells to make it easier for you to vacuum. Use your vacuum cleaner with the upholstery attachment to clean a mattress.

Take note that vacuuming does not deep clean the mattress. Deep cleaning the mattress will require washing the mattress with an upholstery cleaner, and using a stain remover to spot treat discoloration. For deep cleaning, you can opt to clean a mattress once or twice a year to get deep-seated dirt out.
