Can't see your Sunday Roast or baked cookies in the oven? Your oven door isn't dim, it's dirty! Ovens are rarely cleaned as we assume the different parts never touch any food item. However, the grease splatters, oil fumes, and sticky sauces can gather around the oven, making your oven door seem dim and dark.
Fortunately, cleaning an oven door is a snap once you wrap your head around the convenient way to do it! You can even use the self-cleaning mode of your oven to clean the grime from your entire oven. Here's how you can manually clean your glass oven door:
What You'll Need
Oven doors are typically made from glass, and a commercial glass cleaner often works well to clean the exterior glass. However, the inside glass comes in contact with the food, so you would want to clean this side with homemade, food-safe cleaners. You can make a DIY version at home with just a few household ingredients:
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Dish soap
- Damp cloth or Sponge
- Razor blade (optional)
- Microfiber cloth
How to Clean Oven Glass: A Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Steam Your Oven and Let it Cool
Check the oven's manual for a self-cleaning function, and follow the instructions for the steam method. Else, place a heat-proof bowl of water in your oven, and let it run for a few minutes. The heat should create water vapor that will steam your oven clean. The steam will loosen the grime, making them easier to remove later on. Let the oven cool until just warm.
Step 2: Create Your Cleaning Paste
Create a cleaning paste made from baking soda and vinegar. Add a few drops of dish soap as a degreaser. The baking soda will act as an abrasive to clean the oven glass, while the vinegar penetrates through dried and burnt food bits to soften them.
Step 3: Apply the Cleaning Paste and Let it Sit
Apply the cleaning paste all over the glass, making sure there is an even layer all over the surface. Let the solution sit for 20 minutes or longer, for deeply-stained ovens. As the oven is still warm, the baking soda paste may dry up before the allotted time is over. Simply spray more vinegar to moisten the paste.
Step 4: Wipe the Oven Door Clean
Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe the oven door clean. You should notice the food bits have softened, and are easy enough to wipe clean with a regular sponge. Wipe away the grime and baking soda residue.
For tough stains that just won't come out, use the flat edge of a razor blade to gently scrape away at the stain. You may need to use a bit of elbow grease, but avoid applying too much pressure as you may end up scratching the glass.
Step 5: Rinse Your Oven Door
"Rinse" the oven door by using a damp sponge to remove as much residue as you can. You may notice the solution bubbles due to the dish soap in the cleaning paste, so keep rinsing the sponge, and wiping the door until there is no more residue.
Step 6: Wipe the Oven Door Dry
Wipe the oven door dry using a microfiber cloth. Don't forget to clean the exterior of your oven door as well, and dry the other side as well. You can opt to dry your oven by turning it on to evaporate the remaining moisture away.
What to Avoid When Cleaning Glass Oven Door
Since oven doors are made from glass, there are a few do's and don'ts when it comes to cleaning it. Anything that can't be done to glass, shouldn't be done to your oven door to ensure the material stays durable.
- Never add cold to a hot oven door. A sudden change of extreme temperatures will cause your glass door to shatter. After steaming the oven, let it cool before handling it to prevent the glass from shattering.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners when cleaning oven glass. Steel wool, abrasive scrubbers, and other rough sponges will scratch the glass, making it look matte, dull, and opaque. Plus, the scratches will create pockets in your oven glass for germs and dirt to settle into.
- Do not use the sharp edge of a razor when removing grime, and stick to the flat edge to avoid scratching your oven window.
- Do not let food stain on your oven window. Wipe down the window after each use to remove loose bits before they dry and crust on your oven glass.
