Daily Cleaning Checklist

A kitchen cleaning checklist keeps track of all the chores you need to do to keep the kitchen spotless. The checklist includes the necessary items you need to tackle the cleaning tasks, as well as the different areas in the kitchen that need a good scrubbing. Each kitchen is different, so while we have a general cleaning checklist, it is best to tailor the checklist to your kitchen:

  • Store Unnecessary Items Away
  • Wash the Dishes
  • Clear the Sink
  • Clean the Countertops
  • Wipe Down Appliances
  • Clean Stove Top
  • Vacuum and Mop the Floor
  • Rinse Sponges, Kitchen Towels, etc.
  • Take Out the Trash
  • Replace Trash Can Liner
  • Sanitize High-touch Areas

Some tasks can be done weekly or monthly - whenever the area is starting to gain a layer of dust and grime on it. These tasks usually involve deep cleaning appliances like the oven, stove, or microwave:

  • Clear and Deodorize Garbage Disposal
  • Deep Clean the Oven
  • Clean the Microwave
  • Clean the Coffee Maker
  • Remove Mineral Stains and Soap Scum from Stainless Steel Sink

How to Clean Kitchen: A Step-by-step Guide

General Cleaning

  1. Store Unnecessary Items Away - This goes for ingredients, recipe guides, cleaned and dried cookware, and anything that doesn't belong in the kitchen. Place them all back into their respective storage areas, or temporarily place items that do not belong in the kitchen in a box to store them later on.
  2. Wash the Dishes - Wash all the dirty dishes in the sink, and set them out to dry on the dish rack. If you're using a dishwasher, you can place the dirty dishes in the machine while you go about your kitchen cleaning to optimize your time. By the end of your cleaning routine, you should be able to store those dishes away.
  3. Clear the Sink - Use a sponge and some soapy water to clean the kitchen sink, and remove any food bits caught by the drain. Clean the faucet and the faucet handles as well. Use a towel to dry the sink, although this step is optional.
  4. Clean the Countertops - As you've cleared the unnecessary items from the countertops, you can now use your preferred cleaning solution to wipe the countertops spotless. Use a damp cloth with a couple of drops of dish soap to wipe the countertops, or use a commercial, all-purpose cleaning solution. You can also prepare some mild, soapy water with castile soap for marble and granite countertops.
  5. Wipe Down Appliances - Similarly, wipe down appliances with your preferred cleaning solution. Wipe only the exterior with the cleaning solution, while any part that touches food should be cleaned with a cloth dipped in hot water, or washed in warm water by hand if the part is removable.
  6. Clean Stove Top - Give your stove a good wiping to remove any traces of food or oils from food preparation. For stuck-on grime, use a paste made with baking soda and white vinegar, and apply it directly on food stains. Wipe clean after 15 minutes to lift the stains away. This method works on both glass and grated stovetops.
  7. Vacuum and Mop the Floor - Sweep or vacuum the entire kitchen floor, making sure to get into the nooks and corners of your kitchen. Mop the cleaned floors with a disinfectant solution, and let the entire floor dry before proceeding.
  8. Rinse Sponges, Kitchen Towels, etc. - In the meantime, rinse or wash your kitchen sponge, as well as any kitchen towel you've used to clean the areas in the kitchen. Wash the rag you've used to clean the kitchen countertops, as well as the scrub brush or sponge you've used to clean your stove and appliances.
  9. Take Out the Trash and Replace Liner - Tie up the trash bag if the contents are full, and take out the trash. Replace the inner plastic liner with a new bag.
  10. Sanitize High-touch Areas - Spray some disinfecting solution onto a paper towel, and disinfect high-touch areas: light switches, handles, countertops, and more. Don't forget to sanitize the dining table as well.

Deep Cleaning

  1. Clear and Deodorize the Disposal - Place ice cubes and salt down the garbage disposal and turn it on. As the blades grind the ice, immediately pour boiling water down the drain in a steady stream. Let the reaction clean the blades of your garbage disposal, and deodorize it too.
  2. Deep Clean the Oven - Don't spend hours scrubbing the oven clean. Instead, use a cleaning paste made from baking soda and vinegar to remove stuck-on food bits with ease. Let the paste sit on the caked-on food, and wipe clean after 15-20 minutes.
  3. Clean the Microwave - Place a bowl of vinegar and water in the microwave, and let it run on high for about a minute or two. The steam should lift the stains out, and you can get rid of the rest of the food bits using a microfiber cloth dipped in hot soapy water.
  4. Clean the Coffee Maker - Run a rinse cycle to get rid of any old, dirty water remaining in the tubes of your coffee machine, then dissolve a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Place the mixture into the water reservoir of the machine and let it run a full cycle. Run another rinse cycle to remove any residue from the cleaning solution.
  5. Remove Mineral Stains and Soap Scum from Stainless Steel Sink - Spray vinegar all over the sink to dissolve mineral stains and soap scum. Use a scrubbing brush, or the scouring pad side of a sponge to carefully remove the stains, scrubbing in circular motions. Rinse the sink, and pat with a dry cloth to prevent stains from forming.

Additional Kitchen Cleaning Tips

  • Hand wash fragile items like fine China, wine glasses, and oddly-shaped utensils for the best care, as placing them in the dishwasher may damage these items.
  • Start your cleaning with small appliances before moving onto the bigger, more complicated machines. This way, you can conserve energy while doing more with your time.
  • Use natural products that are food-safe and non-toxic when cleaning your kitchen to avoid accidental ingestion.
  • Wipe every surface daily: from the appliances like the refrigerator and the stand mixer, to gas burners, oven doors, and all countertops. Tiles and walls should be wiped clean daily as well.
  • Other cleaning tasks are best handled by professionals, such as: cleaning light fixtures and chandeliers, cleaning the range hood, deep cleaning the refrigerator, deep cleaning the kitchen pipes, and more.
