There are two kinds of electric stove tops: one with a glass stove top, and one that has exposed coil burners that heat up your food. Both are just as susceptible to grime and grease as any stove top, which is why it is important to know how to clean each kind.
In this article, we'll show you the DIY way of cleaning your electric stove using food safe materials. Baking soda and vinegar will be our main ingredients, as they are much safer to use than any commercial glass cleaner. Here's how to clean your electric stove:
What You'll Need
- Dish soap
- Vinegar
- Baking soda - optional
- Scrub brush
- Damp cloth or Sponge
- Microfiber towel
How to Clean Electric Stove Top: A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Clean Your Stove Top
Clean your stove top by taking a damp cloth or sponge, and adding a drop of dish soap. Use this to wipe in and around your cooled, unplugged stove top to get rid of any loose debris, grime, or dust. This is a good practice to do everyday to keep your stove top cleaner, longer!
Step 2: Create Your Cleaning Paste
Mix together your baking soda and white vinegar until it forms a thick paste. This quality paste is safe to use on both coiled and glass-top stoves, and will remove the hardened gunk by lifting and softening them as it soaks in.
Step 3: Apply the Paste and Let it Sit
Apply the paste where there are hardened bits stuck onto the stove. Soak the hardened bits with the paste, and let the paste sit to work for about 10-20 minutes - the longer you leave it on, the easier it will be to remove the grime.
Step 4: Scrub Clean
Take your scrub brush, and start scrubbing out the now-loosened grime. Go over the entire stove top, and use a little elbow grease to get rid of all the hardened gunk. Be careful not to use too much pressure on a glass-top stove, as the cleaning solution may scratch the surface.
For coiled burners, it is a good idea to use a long-handled brush to scrub the coils clean. A bottle brush or a wire brush from metal straws can help you to get in between the narrow spaces of the coils, and get a deeper clean inside.
Step 5: Wipe to Rinse, and Dry
Use a clean, damp washcloth to "rinse" the stove top. This will remove any remaining residue from the cleaning paste, as well as any gunk that was loosened during the process. Avoid getting the electrical components wet, however, and make sure the stove is unplugged before you do so.
Take a good quality drying towel, such as a microfiber towel, and dry the stove top. A microfiber towel will also buff out a glass-top stove, giving it a pristine and shiny appearance. Avoid towels that leave fibers after wiping, as these fibers may burn when you use the stove.
Keeping Your Stove Top Clean
Keeping your stove top clean may sound impossible, as spilled dishes from cooking is inevitable. However, there are a few tips to keep your stove top cleaner for a long time, and as you form a habit of proper kitchen care, keeping your stove clean will be second nature to you!
- Use a bigger pot or pan to cook. Cooking on small pans will inevitably overflow, so it is better to cook with a large pot or pan.
- Clean as you go. Clean your stove as you cook to prevent the spills from hardening up, and drying on your stove top.
- Wipe your stove after every use. Even if you haven't spilled anything, it is good practice to wipe your stove clean using a damp sponge with a drop of dishwashing liquid to remove dust and oil splatters.
