How often have you been told to go clean your room, and you simply took your items from the floor and hid them under the bed? Back then, you probably didn't realize that your bedroom needed a deep clean to get rid of all the dirt and dust that is causing you allergies.
Understand the proper cleaning process with our bedroom cleaning checklist for daily and weekly cleaning! Gather your cleaning supplies and let's get to giving your room a good deep clean.
Daily Bedroom Cleaning Checklist
Materials You’ll Need
- Hamper for dirty clothes
- Garbage bag
- All-purpose cleaning spray
- Glass cleaner
- Disinfecting spray
- Vacuum cleaner
- Microfiber cloth
A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Pick Up the Laundry
Take all the clothes from the floor and chairs, and place them in a hamper to take to the laundry room. Make it a habit to place your used clothes directly into the hamper instead of the floor as dirty clothes can be a hotspot for germs and bacteria growth. Anything that has been soiled or touched the floor should be washed.
Some clothes are worn over the course of a few days as they don't make direct contact with the skin, and are kept generally clean. If you decide to keep using your jacket or sweater, then fold them neatly and place them in your closet, or drape them over your chair in a proper fashion.
Step 2: Pick Up the Trash
Pick up all trash items: food wrappers, used tissues, crumpled paper, and the like. Toss them in the trash can. If the trash bin is full, tie up the plastic liner and replace it with a new trash bag. Best to replace the liner after cleaning the room.
You may need to dispose of the vacuumed debris in the trash bin while cleaning your bedroom, so keep the plastic liner on hand for this purpose. If your trash bin is overflowing, you can push the contents down to pack them. However, avoid doing this if there are sharp items in your trash bin.
Step 3: Vacuum the Floors
Use the vacuum cleaner on a dry setting to vacuum up any remaining debris on the floors. If you have carpeted flooring, remove the beater bar to avoid damaging the carpet fibers. You may have a more challenging time vacuuming carpets than hardwood floors as dirt can get stuck deep within the carpet fibers.
For hardwood floors, run over the entire area with your vacuum cleaner in a swift motion, making sure to get in the nooks and crannies of the floorboards. For rugs, you may opt to shake the dirt out to the hardwood floor before vacuuming. For carpets, you will need to go over each area slowly, and use a stronger suction to get rid of deep-seated dirt.
Step 4: Wipe Down All Surfaces
Take your microfiber cloth, and dampen it with a bit of all-purpose cleaner. Wipe down surfaces that tend to get dusty, like the night stand, the closet, your computer table, picture frames, and the top of your TV. Any surface that can accumulate dust should be wiped down with an all-purpose cleaner.
Other areas, like door knobs and light switches, should be sprayed or wiped with a disinfecting solution as these are high-touch points that can harbor germs. Wipe your TV remote, computer mouse, and keyboard using a damp cloth with disinfectant solution daily to kill the germs making you sick.
Step 5: Clean the Glass Surfaces
The glass cleaner comes in handy to spray onto your windows and glass tables, but did you know it can also be used to clean the screen of your TV, computer, and laptop? For windows, you may spray the solution directly onto the glass before using a dry microfiber cloth to wipe the windows clean. Same goes for glass tables, closets, and mirrors.
For electrical appliances and devices, it is best to apply the cleaner onto a clean cloth first before wiping the solution onto the screen to avoid getting moisture in the internal mechanisms. Wipe in circular motions to remove streaks, and you'll have crystal clear glass that is void of dust and fingerprints!
Weekly Cleaning Checklist (Deep Cleaning)
Materials You’ll Need
- Baking soda for carpeted floors and curtains
- Furniture polish
- New bed linens
- Disinfecting spray
- Microfiber cloth
- Vacuum cleaner
- Air freshener (optional)
A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Fold and Store Clean Clothes in the Closet
Clothes coming back from the laundry? Fold and store neatly-pressed clothes in the closet to prevent them from getting dusty again. Hang up the clothes that tend to crease easily. Life hack: Use cedarwood hangers to ward off moths and other fabric-eating bugs!
Step 2: Deodorize your Carpets and Curtains
Sprinkle baking soda all over your carpets, and work the powder deep into the carpet fibers to remove the dirt trapped inside. Allow the baking soda to sit in your carpet for at least an hour while you tackle other tasks. Vacuum up the baking soda afterwards and you have a deodorized carpet.
Remove your curtains from its holder, and place them in a large plastic bag or a storage container. Sprinkle in some baking soda. Shake the container until the curtains are completely covered in the powder, and let sit for an hour before dusting off the powder from your curtains.
Step 3: Wipe down Light Fixtures and Ceiling Fan
These high areas aren't often cleaned, but you should consider cleaning them at least once a week to prevent dust accumulating on them. Use a damp cleaning cloth and to wipe down the lighting fixtures and the fan blades. Make sure these are turned off before you start cleaning.
Step 4: Polish Furniture
Give your furniture good polish to bring back that shiny appearance that makes them look like new. If you have brass fixtures, polishing these would help prevent them from tarnishing. Use the same polish to bring back to shine on your mirrors and any chrome fixtures that you have around your room.
Step 5: Replace Bed Linens
Lastly, you should replace your bedding at least once a week. Have different sets of bedding linens, and change them on a weekly basis. This way you can ensure that you're always sleeping in a clean, comfortable bed! Use an air freshener around your room if preferred.
