Common Problems with the Ruud Air Conditioner

Problem Possible Causes Solutions
Clogged or Dirty Filter General dust and debris. Clean the filter with soap and water.
Refrigerant Leak Crack or hole in the refrigerant line. Contact a technician to fix the issue.
Malfunctioning Temperature Control Thermostat Power supply issues; Locked buttons. Replace batteries; Unlock buttons.
Sounds Coming from AC Unit Various causes: Fan blade issues; Compressor issues; Debris; Etc. Identify the cause of the sound, and troubleshoot according to the problem.

#1 Clogged or Dirty Air Filter

Ruud air conditioners are generally durable, but if you don't have a habit of cleaning the Ruud air filter, then you may encounter problems with your unit. Dirty air filters can cause the evaporator coil to freeze, as well as restricted air movement around the unit. These can lead to bigger problems later on that can irreversibly damage your air conditioner.

Clean the air filter once every two weeks by washing it with soap under running tap water. Clean the evaporator coil with a vacuum cleaner, and let everything dry before placing it back into the unit. Clear the air vents and the return air duct as well.

#2 Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant leaks are common across all air conditioner types, brands, and models. Refrigerant does not evaporate, so if your air conditioning system registers low refrigerant charge, you know there's a leak in the unit. A coolant leak can cause hot air to blow from your AC unit, as well as frozen evaporator coils, and an overheating unit.

Refrigerant leaks cannot be fixed at home, but will require the services of a licensed technician to fix the leak, fix it, and top up the refrigerant. Trust in our services at Luce Aircon to get that problem out of the way for you, and get your AC unit up and running again!

#3 Malfunctioning Temperature Control Thermostat

Is your air conditioning system powered on, but the air temperature in the room still isn't cool enough? It is possible you have a malfunctioning thermostat, or a miscommunication between the AC thermostat and your air conditioner.

The first cause you can check is the power supply of your control board or remote controller. If the batteries of your control board are starting to dwindle, then consider changing the batteries to see if that solves the issue.

Next, check whether the buttons are locked, which some air conditioners have as an automatic feature. Unlocking these buttons may solve the issue for you. If all else fails, have an experienced technician from Luce Aircon inspect and fix the problem.

#4 Sounds Coming from Ruud Air Conditioners

Sounds coming from a new unit are rare, as most air conditioners make noises when their parts wear down over time from regular use. The Ruud AC is generally durable, and would not often make noise unless there is an issue with the internal components of the unit such as the compressor, condenser fan, or refrigerant lines.

Different sounds have different indications. A loud, banging sound is most likely due to a bent fan blade brushing against another component of your air conditioner, while a low but loud whirring noise may be coming from your Ruud air conditioner compressor. The first step in troubleshooting aircon noises to to identify the sound:

  • Banging or clunking noise - Bent fan blades; Rattling debris.
  • Low whirring or humming noise - Compressor contactor issues.
  • High-pitched humming noise - Fan motor issues.
  • Hissing noise - Gas refrigerant leak.

The next step is to check the internal components of your Ruud AC. If the sound is coming from the fan blades, bending the blades back into their original position will do the trick. You can also use a long stick to dislodge rattling debris from your unit. However, issues with the fan motor, internal compressor, and other parts will need expert handling.

How to Reset Ruud Air Conditioner

Reset Point: Reset Button

To reset your Ruud air conditioner, turn your AC unit off, then locate the reset button of your Ruud air conditioner. The reset button should be two pins on your defrost board, which you can press by using a flat screwdriver across both pins. The AC unit should reset, and fix any internal AC problems pertaining to system glitches and communication errors.

Ruud Air Conditioner Troubleshooting Guide

#1 Check the Owner's Manual

Check your owner's handbook and manual at the first symptom of an issue with your Ruud air conditioner. The owner's guide should have step-by-step diagnostics and simple repair instructions for common problems that you can do yourself. Simple troubleshooting steps are included in the manual, and it is a good reference guide to keep on hand.

However, more complicated problems will require the expertise of a licensed technician, and our expert HVAC technician teams in Luce are sure to be experienced enough to tackle the problems surrounding your unit.

#2 Clean Your Ruud Air Conditioner

Cleaning your air conditioner is a good step in troubleshooting its problems as most common air conditioner issues stem from dirty units. Clean the filters at least once every two weeks, and give the indoor unit a good wipe down daily. This will prevent dust and debris buildup from damaging your unit.

Clean the outdoor unit and run water through it. This will dislodge any debris that may get stuck inside, as well as wash off any dust that accumulated as the outdoor unit is exposed to the natural elements outside.
