Common Problems with the TCL Air Conditioner

Problem Possible Causes Solutions
AC Keeps Turning Off Dirty filter and coils; Overloaded unit Clean the AC unit.
AC is Leaking Refrigerant Worn refrigerant line. Call a technician to fix the leak.
AC Compressor is Faulty Worn down compressor. Replace compressor; Contact manufacturer if AC unit is under 10-year warranty.

#1 TCL Air Conditioner Keeps Turning Off

If your TCL window air conditioner keeps turning off, only to turn back on after a few minutes, then your AC unit is short-cycling. This often happens to units that have not been cleaned in a while, as well as frozen ACs. Clean your air conditioning unit to see if that solves the issue, and scrub the air filter clean to prevent any blockages in air circulation.

An overheating unit may suddenly turn off, but it won't turn back on until the unit has cooled off. Avoid overloading your unit, and shade the outdoor unit during sunny days. Let both the indoor unit and the outdoor unit completely cool off before trying to power your air conditioner on.

#2 Air Conditioner is Leaking Refrigerant

There are a few ways you can tell the refrigerant is leaking out of your air conditioner. First, your AC unit will stop blowing cold air as there is no refrigerant to cool down the air around the unit. Second, your evaporator coils may freeze up and cause your air conditioner to blow warm air instead of cool air.

Another way to tell if your window air conditioner is leaking refrigerant is that it will leak water, or condensate, through the vents of your indoor unit. Window air conditioners are often installed tilted to the outside, which redirects leaking condensate outdoors. Condensate leaking indoors means your AC unit has frozen and is thawing due to leaking refrigerant.

A technician will be able to find and fix the leak in your refrigerant lines. Technicians use a safe, fluorescent dye to trace the path of the leak. A UV light will illuminate the dye, making it easier to see where the dye escapes. The technician will then fix the leak for you, and top up your refrigerant levels.

#3 Air Conditioner Compressor is Faulty

Signs that the compressor is faulty include a malfunctioning temperature sensor, a loud, whirring noise, warm air blowing out of the AC unit, or an error code flashing on the LED screen of your air conditioning system.

The compressor is the heart of an air conditioner, and is often located in the outside AC unit. When this starts to malfunction, it could mean the end of the life of your air conditioner. First check if your compressor is included in a 10-year warranty, which often comes with your AC unit. If it is, have it replaced by your aircon supplier.

Else, we can check your compressor. We may be able to repair your unit or suggest a replacement compressor. If you're ready to purchase a whole new air conditioning system, we'll also be here to guide you on the most appropriate type, brand, and model for your home!

How to Reset Your TCL Air Conditioner

Reset Point: Circuit Breaker

To reset your TCL air conditioner, check your circuit breaker box for the breaker connected to your air conditioner. Flip the switch off, making sure you've unplugged all other devices from the same loop. Wait a few minutes, then flip the switch back into its original position to reset your TCL air conditioner.

Resetting the thermostat settings is done differently. First, you will need to locate the reset button on your thermostat or control board. Press and hold the reset button for 3 seconds, and wait for your unit to power back on. Check if the thermostat controls have been set at the default settings.

TCL Air Conditioners Troubleshooting Guide

#1 Check for Error Codes

The self-diagnosis system of your TCL air conditioner would flash an error code on the LED screen of your unit once an issue arises. Check for any error codes on your air conditioning unit, and cross-reference this with the list of error codes in your owner's manual.

More often than not, you'll be able to troubleshoot most problems using the manual, with advanced problems to be dealt with by professionals. Error codes differ per unit, where the TCL split system would have different codes from their window air conditioners. Make sure you refer to the correct manual when troubleshooting.

#2 Maintain a Schedule for Aircon Cleaning and Checkups

Air conditioners are not easy to replace, which is why most households take to great lengths to upkeep their AC units. We recommend that you schedule a bi-annual aircon cleaning session, a maintenance checkup, and an inspection.

Common Error Codes
