For many parents, kids are the source of joy - but they can also be the source of the most mess around the house! Every exhausted parent knows how difficult it is to keep up with their children, who seem to have endless amounts of energy to scatter their toys all over the house and run into other mess-making adventures.

What You’ll Need

Cleaning a children's room is much like cleaning any bedroom, with the exception that your kids may have more dirty dishes and plastic toys laying around than most rooms. You won't need any fancy tools or gadgets to clean a children's room, but you'll need a large basket for toys and clothes:

  • Large laundry basket
  • Basket or bucket for toys
  • Trash bags
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Damp rags
  • Clean cloths
  • Disinfectant spray
  • Window cleaning solution

How to Clean Your Kid’s Room in 15 Minutes

Cleaning their room is a great way to instill a sense of responsibility to your kids. Rooms should be kept organized and tidy at all times, and you can already ingrain this duty to your kids as young as toddlers. Get your little ones to help you clean while you show them how to clean their own room by example!

While a young child may not understand how to vacuum and safely use cleaning solutions, they can start learning to clean after themselves by picking up their beloved toys, or making their beds. It's never too early to get the kids involved in house upkeep!

Step 1: Gathering the Dirty Clothes

Start by gathering the clothes that are scattered about. Any piece of clothing or bedding that may be on the floor, slumped on chairs, or on tables can be placed in a clothes hamper for easy carrying to the laundry room. Segregate clean clothes from soiled ones, and return bedding that fell to the floor.

Step 2: Disposing all the Obvious Trash

Once the clothes have been cleared, you should have a better vision of the pieces of trash around the kids room. Pick up any pieces of trash like food wrappers, crumpled papers, tissues, and more. Place these into your trash can or bag for easy disposal later on. Check under the bed for pieces of trash as well.

Helpful Hint: Be careful not to accidentally pick up your child's artworks or toys, as disposing of these may cause problems later on!

Step 3: Picking up the Scattered Toys

Get your kids to help with this one: pick up all the scattered toys and place them in a large bucket, or in the designated toy box if one is available. Let your kids learn to keep their toys after playing by having them join in the cleaning! Inspect the toys for dirt marks, food stains, and any grime on them while you clean.

For dirty toys, place them in a separate bucket to clean and disinfect later on. Both soft toys and plastic ones can be washed and cleaned, with the exception of mechanical toys which can only be wiped clean with a disinfectant solution.

Step 4: Vacuuming the Hardwood Floor or Carpet

Now that the floor is clear of all the toys, it's time to vacuum! While your young kids may not be able to help with this task, they can learn by example on the proper ways to vacuum up for a clean room. Vacuum the entire area of the room, going over carpeted areas multiple times.

Vacuuming the floors helps keep away dust and allergens from your child's bedroom, and clears any debris from the floor. Vacuuming is essential for carpeted flooring where sweeping cannot get through the carpet fibers to pick up dirt.

Step 5: Making the Bed

Get your kids to help you make the bed by pulling the fitted sheet to the correct position, folding the blankets, and fluffing up the pillows to have a bed ready for a comfortable sleep! You may also use the upholstery attachment to vacuum the sheets, but this step is optional if you change the bed sheets weekly.

Step 6: Dusting Surfaces

Use a soft cloth dampened with a little water to wipe surfaces, getting rid of the dust that accumulated on table tops, countertops, shelves, and more. Give every exposed surface a good wipe down to dust them, and don't forget to wipe the ceiling fan, air conditioner, and TV as well!

Use a disinfectant spray to sanitize the room, especially when your kids tend to sit on the floor or place random items in their mouth. There are plenty of child-safe disinfectant solutions on the market that will get rid of germs without harming your little one!

Step 7: Cleaning the Windows

Do the windows have little kid fingerprints on them from daily opening and closing? Grab that spray bottle of glass cleaner and give those windows a good spritz to remove dust, oils, and fingerprints. Use a rag or paper towels to wipe the windows dry for a clear view!

Step 8: Taking the Clothes to the Laundry

The room is clean, but you still have that hamper full of dirty laundry, and that bag you need to take to the trash can. Clear the room of any items that do not belong inside: get your kid to take their used dishes to the sink, clear their toy box of trash items, and take the hamper to the laundry area. You've successfully cleaned the kids' bedroom!
