Walls are one of the most important components of a house, as they set the overall atmosphere and appearance of a home. However, keeping them clean can be challenging, especially in homes with kids or pets.

Fingerprints, dust, and stains can accumulate quickly, making walls look dirty and dull. You might want to clean it right away, but do keep in mind cleaning walls properly without damaging the paint or wallpaper is crucial to maintaining a fresh and polished look in your home.

How to Clean Walls?

Clear the Wall

First, remove any furniture, decorations, or hanging items near the wall. This will allow for better access and prevent accidental damage to your belongings.

Get Rid of Dust

Walls accumulate dust just like any other surface in the house. To get rid of those, use a dry microfiber cloth, duster, or vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and cobwebs. Dusting will prevent dirt from turning into streaks when you apply a cleaning solution later.

Prepare Cleaning Solution

For general wall cleaning, mix warm water with mild dish soap or castile soap in a bucket. If you’re dealing with tough grime, adding a tablespoon of white vinegar can help break down the dirt more effectively. Vinegar is especially useful for removing grease, stains, and mildew—making it one of the most effective cleaning solutions for walls.

Perform a Spot Test

Before applying any cleaning solution to the entire wall, do a small spot test in an inconspicuous area. This is particularly important for painted walls, as some solutions may cause discolorations or fading. If the paint remains intact and there’s no visible damage, you can proceed with cleaning the rest of the wall.

Wipe Down the Walls

Next, dampen a soft sponge or microfiber cloth in the cleaning solution and gently wipe the walls in circular motions. Be careful not to soak the walls, as excess moisture can damage paint or wallpaper. For high-traffic areas, pay extra attention to spots near doorways, switches, and corners where grime tends to build up.

Scrub it Down

If there are stubborn marks or dirt patches, use a soft-bristled brush or sponge to gently scrub the area. Avoid scrubbing too hard, as this can remove the pint or create uneven patches on the wall. For painted walls, a light touch is key to keeping the surface smooth and intact.

Rinse and Dry

After cleaning, use a clean damp cloth to wipe off any leftover soap residue. Then, dry the walls immediately using a towel or let them air dry. This step helps prevent streaks and water stains, leaving your walls looking fresh and spotless.

How to Remove Stubborn Stains On Walls?

  • Water Stains: Water stains often occur due to leaks. So, the first step in removing them is to identify and fix the source of the leak. Once that’s done, clean the stain with a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water.
  • Smoke Stains: Smoke stains can leave a yellowish residue on walls. To remove them, mix warm water with a small amount of ammonia, vinegar, and baking soda. Apply the solution with a sponge and gently wipe the stained area.
  • Oil-Based Stains: Grease and oil stains are often found in the kitchen. Clean it by sprinkling baking soda over the stain to absorb excess oil. After a few minutes, wipe it away with a dry cloth, then clean the area with a soapy water solution.
  • Crayon or Paint Stains: Your little one may decorate the walls with a scribble of crayons or paint, but don't worry—you can use an old toothbrush dipped in vinegar to slowly brush the stains. Another effective method is using a magic eraser, which works well in lifting crayons and paint stains without damaging the wall.

How to Clean Mouldy Walls?

Mold thrives in damp and humid environments, making it a common problem in Singapore’s climate. It often appears on walls due to poor ventilation, excess moisture, or water leaks. Not only does mold make walls look dirty, but it can also cause health issues like allergies and respiratory problems. That’s why it’s important to remove mold as soon as you spot it!

To eliminate mold, mix water and bleach in a 4:1 ratio. Apply the solution to the affected area using a sponge or spray bottle, and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, scrub the area with a brush and wipe it clean with a damp cloth. If the mold covers a large area or keeps coming back, it might be best to seek professional help to ensure thorough removal.

Pro Tips:  When dealing with mold, be sure to keep the room ventilated and always wear protective gear such as gloves and goggles to prevent irritation.

Additionally, if you’re planning to repaint your walls, always remove mold first. Painting over mold won’t solve the problem—it will only trap the spores and allow the mold to spread underneath the paint. To prevent mold from reappearing, apply an antifungal solution before painting. This creates a protective barrier that helps keep your walls mold-free for longer.

Final Thought

Cleaning walls may not be an easy task, but it’s essential for maintaining a clean and healthy home. Regular wall maintenance prevents dust, stains, and mold buildup, keeping your living space fresh and hygienic. At the very least, dust your wall frequently to prevent dirt accumulation and make deep cleaning easier when necessary!
