Doing things in the bathroom requires a little bit of privacy, and shower curtains provide exactly just that while showering. Showering or bathing is one of the most vulnerable moments we have, and gaining a bit of privacy can be heaven sent. However, the shower curtain that provides us with the privacy we need, gets exposed to bathroom germs, and moisture that builds up mold.

Just like how we need to clean every part of our bathrooms, you need to wash your shower curtain as well. Shower curtains are constantly moist, making them the perfect magnet for mold spores, dirt, and grime. Regularly clean your shower curtain and liner to maintain its cleanliness, and yours!

Cloth Shower Curtain

What You’ll Need

  • A few drops of washing detergent
  • 1 cup of distilled white vinegar
  • Warm water
  • Spot pen for stain removal (optional)
  • Washing machine

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Remove the shower curtain from its position, making sure to be careful not to break the shower curtain rings and plastic liner.
  2. If your shower curtain is stained, use a spot stain remover to loosen the stain and let the laundry machine do the rest.
  3. Fill the laundry machine with warm water until half full.
  4. Add in 1 cup of distilled white vinegar and a few drops of washing detergent.
  5. Place your shower curtain into the laundry machine in a gentle setting. Allow to cycle as you would a regular load of laundry.
  6. Optional: Toss the shower curtain in the tumble dryer to wring out the moisture.
  7. Make sure to replace the shower curtain on its own rod and leave it to air dry.

Plastic Shower Curtain

What You’ll Need

  • Laundry detergent
  • 1 cup of Baking soda
  • Cold water
  • Extra towels (for washing)
  • Washing machine

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Take down your plastic shower curtain from the rod, taking care not to damage the liner and shower curtain rings.
  2. Fill the laundry machine with cold water. Add in the directed amount of laundry detergent.
  3. Add in 1 cup of baking soda. Agitate the water to allow the components to integrate.
  4. Toss in your plastic shower curtain along with a couple of extra towels.
  5. Let the laundry machine cycle on a gentle setting. After the cycle has finished, take your plastic shower curtain out and air dry on the curtain rod.
  6. Do NOT place your plastic shower curtain in the tumble dryer as the material may disintegrate.

Shower Curtain Liner

The shower curtain liner is the part that comes in contact with water the most when we shower, so cleaning this part of your bathroom is essential in keeping your bathroom sanitized. Luckily, unless the liner is badly stained, cleaning a shower curtain liner is an easy task.

What You’ll Need

  • Detergent
  • Bleach (do NOT mix with detergent)
  • Towels
  • Cold water
  • Washing machine

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Take down your shower curtain liner. Place in the laundry machine along with a couple of extra towels.
  2. Fill up your laundry machine until half full with cold water. Add in the required amount of detergent.
  3. Allow the machine to cycle on a gentle setting. After the cycle has finished, fill up with water again for the rinse cycle.
  4. During the rinse cycle, add in a quarter cup of bleach (color-safe bleach for colored shower curtain liners). Let rinse to remove mold stains.
  5. Take the shower curtain liner out of the laundry machine and let air dry.
  6. Do NOT place shower curtain liner in the tumble dryer as this may disintegrate the material.
