Your air conditioner is a significant financial investment, but the spending doesn’t just stop after you’ve bought your brand-new unit. Many individuals often underestimate the amount of electricity that their air conditioner needs to operate smoothly. Keep in mind that purchasing a new AC unit will also mean a higher monthly utility bill, but how much electricity does your air conditioner actually use?

How Much Electricity Does an Air Conditioner Use Per Month?

The amount of electricity that an air conditioner uses per month will greatly vary depending on a few factors. Here are a few to keep in mind:

  • Duration of Operation: The more hours an air conditioner is left to run, the more energy it’ll need to consume.
  • Temperature Settings: Air conditioners that are set to a lower temperature will need to work harder to cool down the room to your preference. The unit’s compressor will also need to exert more effort to maintain the lower temperature, especially if there’s a greater difference from the indoor temperature, leading to higher energy consumption.
  • Cooling Capacity: A bigger air conditioner with a higher cooling capacity, often measured in BTU or HP, will naturally need more electricity to function, as it was built to cool down a much larger space efficiently.
  • Energy Efficiency: Air conditioners that have an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) and Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) ratings will consume much less energy, with a higher numerical rating resulting in more cost savings.
  • Maintenance: Air conditioners that are well-maintained and regularly cleaned will function more efficiently as opposed to those that undergo irregular maintenance, which are more likely to be forced to work harder and consume more power.

How to Calculate AC Power Consumption?

To calculate AC power consumption, which is measured in kWh, you’ll need to determine your unit’s power input, measured in watts, and the operation time, measured in hours. Then, you can insert the values into this formula:

Power Consumption = Power Input x Operation Time / 1000

From there, you can also multiply the resulting power consumption with the amount that you're charged per kWh to find out the cost of your air conditioner’s energy consumption. As an alternative, you can also use an air conditioner electricity consumption calculator to simplify the process.

How Many kWh Does a 1HP Aircon Use?

If the power input of your air conditioner is measured in HP rather than kW, then you can still use the formula above, as 1HP is 0.735499 kW. After converting the power input to the correct unit of measurement, you can go ahead and plug it into the formula.

How to Reduce AC Power Consumption

If you find that the cost of running your air conditioner is too high for your budget, then here are some tips to significantly reduce it:

  • Turn off the air conditioner when it’s not in use.
  • Consider alternative cooling options such as an electric fan or opening a window to increase air circulation.
  • Avoid setting your air conditioner to a drastically low temperature, as this will push it to work much harder and use more electricity.
  • Book an appointment with an aircon cleaning and maintenance service to ensure that your air conditioner is running as efficiently as possible.
  • When using your air conditioner, make sure that the room is sealed properly to provide a more conducive environment for cooling.

The Importance of Knowing Your Electricity Usage

Getting the right electricity usage for your air conditioner is very important, as it can help you monitor and maintain your desired power consumption every month. The result? A well-performing, energy-efficient AC unit and an electricity bill that doesn’t electrocute your wallet!
