Fruit flies can be the most pesky thing to deal with — especially if there are a lot of them in your bathroom.

So how exactly can you get rid of them?

After reading this article, we guarantee that your bathroom will be free of these pesky and irritating home insects.

Why Are There Fruit Flies in Your Bathroom?

There are many things that could attract a fruit fly.

Fruit flies may be attracted to any food remnants that could be in your bathroom. So the first thing you would want to do is to check your garbage bin for any leftovers. There could also be some traces of food hidden in small corners, so check those areas too.

Another reason, other than the possibility of there being food, is that fruit flies prefer moist and warm places, such as your bathrooms.

But that’s not all. Fruit flies may also be attracted to debris in your shower or sink drain. If you spot flies around your drains, there’s a chance they could be sewer gnats, which look a lot like fruit flies. Either way, we want them gone.

How to Get Rid of Fruit in Bathroom: 3 Best Ways

Let’s cut to the chase. Here are 3 easy ways to get rid of drain flies and fruit flies in the bathroom.

Homemade Fruit Fly Trap

Before you do this, make sure you manage to remove any food debris from your bathroom. In fact, the cleaner your bathroom is, the better.

While store bought options are pretty cheap and easy to find, if you’re in a rush or want something that you can make at home, here is a way you can make a fruit fly trap.

  1. Mix three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with water and a few drops of dish soap in a disposable cup. Apple cider vinegar smells like fruit, so they’ll be attracted to it! If you have a lot of flies to get rid of, use a larger disposable container.
  2. Cover the cup with plastic wrap and secure it with a rubber band.
  3. Poke a few holes in the plastic wrap with the tip of a pencil. The holes have to be large enough for the flies to fit through, but small enough that they’ll be trapped in the container. The tip of a pencil is the perfect size.
  4. Place the container in your bathroom and wait for the magic to happen. The flies should trap themselves inside.
  5. Dispose of the container outside of your home.

Homemade Drain Cleaner

While trapping fruit flies is a great temporary solution, we want to make sure their larvae die as well.

Usually you can find them in your drain.

What you will want to do is to clean it. Remove the drain cover, take out the hair and dirt inside, and use a drain cleaner.

While you can buy one, it is easy to just boil water and white vinegar and use that as a drain cleaner.

If you have a drain snake, that is a great way to get rid of debris around the sides of your drain.

Afterwards, cover your drain with duct tape for 24 hours, so that any remaining flies that try to escape get stuck. You can throw away the tape after.

How to Prevent Fruit Flies in Bathroom From Coming Back?

The first thing you will need to do is to maintain a clean bathroom! Make sure there are no food remnants whenever you clean, and make sure you get even the tight spots and corners.

You want to make sure that there is no stagnant water in your bathroom. Doing this is as simple as running the water in unused showers and sinks for a minute once a week.

For good measure, you can add half a cup of salt and half a cup of baking soda to your drains and wash it down with white vinegar before rinsing with water.
