To make sure your air conditioner performs optimally for as long as it can, you’ll need to avoid some common mistakes when it comes to air conditioner installation and maintenance. The mistakes are fairly predictable and almost always preventable: from choosing an oversized air conditioner, to trying to DIY the installation, to foregoing maintenance altogether—you’ll want to remember what to avoid if you want your air conditioning to last you as long as possible. Failure to avoid these mistakes can also have some unforeseen consequences unrelated to the unit itself, such as sky-high electricity bills.

While it’s always the best idea to hire an aircon service, it’s better to make the necessary steps to prevent these mistakes from happening rather than solving them when it happens. In the long run, this’ll save you a ton of time, money, and effort. So here are the top 5 mistakes AC system owners make when it comes to air conditioning:

Top 5 Mistakes That AC Owners Make

1. Buying an aircon that’s too big

The first mistake can happen before even buying the unit: buying an oversized air conditioner.

Most people think that a large or oversized air conditioner will cool a room much faster, but that’s simply not true. A bigger AC might not even reduce the humidity in a room or cool the room evenly. Meanwhile, an AC that’s too compact might not cool the room at all, if placed in a room larger than its cooling capacity.

When choosing an air conditioner for your home or your office, make sure you’ve measured or considered the size of the room the air conditioner is going to be in. Once you have that information in hand, you can select what aircon type and size accordingly.

2. Using the wrong setting on the thermostat

Let’s face it: especially in hot, Singaporean weather, everyone gets impatient. You come home from a long day only to step into your scorching hot room. So what do you do? You turn the AC on and set it on the lowest setting in an attempt to cool the room as fast as possible. This does nothing but overexert your unit and raise your electricity bills. Setting the thermostat lower doesn’t expedite the cooling process at all, as the air conditioner will cool the room at it’s own pace. The solution? Either be patient, or buy an air conditioner with a programmable thermostat so that it cools the room before you enter.

3. Neglecting to maintain your unit

Maintaining your unit regularly is key to guaranteeing your air conditioner lasts a long, long time. You’ll need to clean the filters and the evaporator coils at a maximum of once a month. For that task in particular, you can probably DIY it, but as usual it’s best to hire a professional to guarantee a good job. You’ll also need to do a routine check once every quarter. You can’t DIY this step, as you’ll need a professional to go through the unit and check for any signs of the air conditioner breaking down. While this may seem like an extra cost, just remember that maintenance fees will always be cheaper than repair fees. So in the long run, you’ll actually be saving more money.

4. Not closing the doors or windows

This should be a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised by how many people still do it. If you’re using the air conditioner, you need to keep the doors and windows of the room closed to prevent the cool air from escaping. If you leave these open, the cool air will keep escaping, the room won’t reach the desired temperature, and your air conditioning will be working double time for nothing.

5. Not using electric fans

If the day isn’t scorching hot or humid, then why bother using the air conditioner? Most people might think that if you have an air conditioner, you don’t need an electric fan. But if the day is good enough, why not skip the air conditioner, save on energy costs, and just use an electric fan?
