Common Problems with the Panasonic Air Conditioner

We have summarized the common problems that Panasonic aircon owners have with their units in the table below.

Problem Possible Causes Solutions
AC is Not Cooling AC on automatic fan setting Switch AC to cool mode; Remove automatic fan setting
AC is Leaking Water Indoors Dirty filter/coils; Clogged drain line; Refrigerant leak Clean the AC unit
AC is Making a Hissing Noise Refrigerant leak Contact a technician to inspect and fix the unit
AC Smells Musty Mold buildup Clean the filters, coils, and drain lines
AC Won't Turn Off Faulty thermostat Contact a technician to fix your thermostat

#1 Air Conditioner is Not Cooling

Check if your AC unit is set to cool mode. If your remote control batteries are low-powered, it might not have communicated to your air conditioner properly to change the fan settings to cool mode. In this case, changing the batteries will fix the problem. You should also remove the automatic fan speed setting, as this may cause your AC to stop cooling once it reaches the desired temperature.

However, if the problem is with the internal components of your AC unit, then you may need to check the error code to know which component is faulty. You may have a faulty compressor or a refrigerant leak. Check with your user's manual to troubleshoot the error yourself, or have our technicians at Luce inspect your unit's compressor for repairs and replacements.

#2 Air Conditioner Indoor Unit is Leaking Water

The outdoor unit may sometimes leak water droplets as the condensation starts to pool around the unit. This is normal for the outdoor unit. However, if the indoor unit is leaking, then there may be a problem with your AC system. Check for dirty condenser coils, clogged drain lines, and frozen AC units, and clean these components to stop the leak.

#3 Air Conditioner is Making a Hissing Noise

A hissing noise coming from your AC unit may indicate a refrigerant leak. The hissing sound happens as the gas escapes through narrow cracks in the coolant lines. Our technicians will be able to fix the leak for you, and top up your refrigerant flow as well.

#4 Air Conditioner Smells Musty

A musty smell coming from your AC unit almost always means mold. This is common in air conditioners that have not been cleaned routinely, and in high humidity areas. As moisture builds up in the dust particles surrounding the air filter and coils, mold feeds off organic matter left in the AC unit. This causes the musty smell, but an aircon cleaning service should remove it.

#5 Air Conditioner Won't Turn Off

If your AC unit won't turn off, there is a chance you have a faulty thermostat. A dirty condenser coil can also cause your AC unit to refrain from shutting down. For these two issues, you can clean and fix the problems yourself, but if the cause is a damaged or worn control board, then you will need to call an HVAC technician to fix it.

How to Reset Your Panasonic Air Conditioner

Reset Point: Circuit Breaker

To reset your Panasonic AC unit, shut off the air conditioner first. Go to your circuit breaker box, and check for the circuit breaker connected to your AC unit. Flip the switch, and wait for 30 seconds. Flip the switch back into its original position to restart your unit.

Panasonic Air Conditioners Troubleshooting Guide

#1 Check for the Error Code

Your AC unit should show an error code on the screen of your indoor unit, or on the remote control when it detects an issue with your AC system. If you don't see the error code, check your Panasonic AC remote control for a black button, and use a pin to hold and press the button for 5 seconds. The screen should go blank, and an error message will pop up.

#2 Cross-reference with Your User's Manual

Panasonic is relatively thorough with their troubleshooting guides written in the user's manual. Once you've identified the error code, you can move on to narrowing down the problem with your unit by cross-referencing the code with the error code list on your manual.

After figuring out the error code, follow the troubleshooting guide for your specific model. Make sure you have the correct user's manual for your unit as troubleshooting steps may differ from one model to another.
